Fleet Gunners

舰队铳手

The gunners of the Jade Sea Fleet drill to fire in disciplined volleys; where their lead shot lands, no armour holds.

Background

The navies of Cathay's Eastern Provinces have always favoured gunpowder, for at sea one must repel boarding pirates and monsters of the deep alike, and there the Iron Hail gun and the long gun serve better than bow or crossbow. The Fleet Gunners of the Jade Sea Fleet are masters of Cathayan firearms: they set up their long guns upon the deck, trim their aim between the swells, and pin the enemy within their field of fire with volley after volley. The Nipponese coast is thick with fog and fickle in its winds, and the matchcords are forever soaked by the sea. So the Fleet Gunners worked out a handful of makeshift tricks unknown in Cathay itself: barrels wrapped in oilcloth, flash pans sealed with wax, a breath of warmth blown down the barrel before the shot, all so the guns still crack and flame amid Nippon's salt wind, fog and rain. In time, every foe of the Jade Sea Fleet learned one lesson well: when a long string of matchcords begins to hiss along the deck, it is high time to find cover.
