Nippon

Light anti-large spear infantry · T1 · cheap line-filler

Yari Ashigaru

枪足轻

Jingasa shoulder to jingasa, spears thick as a forest: a bristling hedge that holds charging foes beyond the line.

Background

Common foot soldiers in lacquered iron jingasa and plain loaned armour, they lack the hereditary sword and bow craft of their samurai lords and the heavy harness that goes with it, yet their sheer numbers and ordered ranks form the backbone of any great army. Under the drill and commands of their ashigaru captains they press across the open field in step, making up in close-packed files what each man lacks alone. No lofty samurai oath of a martyr's death stirs in an ashigaru's heart; his courage rests only on his trust in the man beside him. So long as the ranks hold and the jingasa stand shoulder to shoulder, the gathered nerve of common folk lends them a fighting will of startling stubbornness.
